    Component Level: Item

Abstract: The Brigham Young University (BYU) American Folk Dancers of Provo, Utah, is a U.S. folk dance group. The Folk Dancers toured Europe each summer performing in international folk festivals and competitions. The dancers have performed in China, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, the Phillipines, Puerto Rico, and Canada in live concerts and on television. Dressed in colorful costumes and backed by a live western band consisting of a fiddle, banjo, guitar and bass, the American Folk Dancers set a furious pace with the fast fiddlin' and fancy footwork of an Appalachian clog, a western hoedown and an exhibition square dance. Telling the history of America through dance, highlights of the performance include Elizabethan quadrilles and the Smokey Mountain Clog, a blend of Irish tap and Indian buck step. Members of the group are selected from hundreds of Brigham Young University students who audition each year. BYU is one of the largest private universities in the United States. Its students come from all 50 states and from 85 countries. The university is sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (The Mormons).
