Abstract

A rich silver-mining town in the 1880s, Leadville's peak Jewish community included 300 Jews, two congregations, a B'nai B'rith lodge, 23 Jewish-owned dry goods stores, a Hebrew school, a Hebrew Ladies' Benevolent Association, and popular Purim balls. Prominent residents have included Meyer Guggenheim (mining and smelting), Simon Guggenheim (financier, philanthropist, senator), David May (department stores), and Wolfe Londoner (later mayor of Denver, 1889-1891). The community declined after World War I. Leadville resident William Korn currently maintains a firm interest in Leadville's Jewish past and restored Temple Israel synagogue.
