Abstract

This box contains (1) book of handwritten music for waltzes, polkas, jigs, quadrilles, reels, marches, schottisches. The book is inscribed in the front cover " Febrary 5, 1877. Mr. Harvey W. Cockeram's Book, Oakland, Douglas County, Oregon." This book was donated to the Llyod Shaw Foundation in 2003 by John Anderson who knew the Cockeram family since the 1930s.

Scope and Contents

Contains 33 pages of printed staves with manuscript melody lines, often with multiple dance tunes per page. The remainder of the 9 x 11.5 inch pages in the book are blank. There are no dance instructions with the music, but there are some tunes with well-known dance titles like Money Musk, Tempest, and Haste to the Wedding. The source of the tunes is not given, but some have been corrected buy a person with the initals "G.R.". As of the date on the inside cover, Mr. Cockeram would have been 19 or 20 years old.

Scope and Contents

On the first page are: Buy a Broom (a waltz derived from the German melody "O Du Lieber Augustin"), the Caledonian Quadrilles, and Midnight Hour (another quadrille). Custodial History

According to the donation letter dated March 10, 2003 included in this box, Harvey Cockerham's brother Roland (Ralph Rowland Cockerham, 1874-1955) gave this book to John Anderson with the advice to "play the music as a FIDDLER and NOT as a classical violinist."
