Fannie Eller was born in Geishen, Russia, in 1881. She and her family immigrated to America when Fannie was a teenager and moved to the West Colfax area of Denver in 1896. She married Jacob Lorber and became interested in the plight of "tb orphans." Sam Berman was born August 9, 1911. His father, Joseph Berman, died when he was two, and shortly thereafter Sam Berman was placed in the Denver Sheltering Home. He spent the longest amount of time at the Denver Sheltering Home of any of its residents. The Home, in consideration of Berman’s long service there, sponsored his education at the University of Denver (DU) as an undergraduate and later as a law student.
