Abstract Joseph Scher was born in Latvia in 1884 and died in Denver in 1969. He emigrated in 1904 and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a BA degree in Sociology and Economics in 1913. Joseph Scher joined the Immigration Service in 1918 and was an investigator for 32 years. He married Rose Saperstein of Pennsylvania that same year. Abstract

The first Jewish families arrived in Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1878 and Congregation Monefiore was formed in 1884. J. E. Rosenwald Lodge, No. 545, I.O.B.B was organized in 1902, the second B'nai B'rith Chapter in New Mexico. The collection contains a stamp press with the corporate seal, two ledgers with Minutes (1902-1970), and two ledgers with financial information, including dues payments by members (1902-1980).

Jacob Gorden Papers

Abstract

Jacob Gorden who was a Schohet, Talmudic scholar, and later a mohel, emigrated to Denver in 1914 from Kolki,Russia to join his uncle, Velvel Heller. Soon Jacob had saved enough to bring his wife Charlotte and daughter Bess over, and the family settled on the Denver's west side. Two more daughters and a son were born in the family. Collection contains papers and notes related to Jacob Gorden from 1920, documents, and digitized photographs from circa 1900 to 1969.

Abstract Alexander Kagan was born in Paris, France in 1906 to Russian parents. At the age of 14, Alexander began work as a fabric and jewelry designer. He came to the United States in 1922 with his mother Chana (Anna) and his brother Haim Persah (Paul). He worked as a fabric designer in New York and in 1930 he became a US citizen. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was stationed in Pueblo, Colorado. He graduated from the University of Denver in 1954 and died in the Denver area in 1994....
