Biography

The Schachet Mercantile Company was located at 2644 West Colfax Avenue in Denver, Colorado. The building was originally built as a saloon in 1896. Eli Schachet and his sons rented the building in 1918, and the building served as their headquarters for their bustling meat and fish store until it closed in 1981. The business served the West Colfax Jewish community for many years as a schochet (kosher meat provider). Schachet and his sons expanded the business to include smoked fish such as lox and sable. Schachet became the only distributor for Manischewitz Co. in Colorado and other Western states.
