Abstract

Contains "Soviet Jewry Action Newsletter" published by the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry. The Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry was launched at Columbia University in 1964 to enlist students to advocate for Soviet Jews. The students led large protest marches, pushed for legislation to aid Soviet Jews, and created educational materials. The Union of Councils for Soviet Jewry was the "adult" counterpart to the Student Struggle for Soviet Jews.

Most of the records consist of letters, educational materials, bulletins and published newspaper accounts of activities by world-wide, national and local groups on behalf of Soviet Jews. Rhoda Friedman collected most of this material. The Records also have scrapbooks about Lillian Hoffman.

Abstract Materials related to "The Night of the Murdered Poets." The Night of the Murdered Poets was the execution of thirteen Soviet Jews in the Lubyanka Prison in Moscow, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union on 12 August 1952. The arrests were first made in September 1948 and June 1949. All defendants were accused of espionage and treason as well as many other crimes. The Colorado Committee was the first in the U.S.to commemorate the execution when a three day fast was held on the steps of the state capitol...

Abstract

Contains materials on the Jackson-Vanik 1974 Trade Act Amendment that in part made trade between the United States and the Soviet Union conditioned upon Soviets relaxing restrictions on Jewish emigration. The bill in the House of Representatives was the Mills-Vanik and in the Senate was the Jackson bill. Members of the Colorado Committee of Concern for Soviet Jewry pushed for the Amendment to prevent the Soviet Union from charging exorbitant fees to Soviet Jews trying to emigrate.

Washington Committee for Soviet Jewry: Memos to members, Publications "The Vigil" newsletter," "The White Book of Exodus." "The White Book of Exodus" was issued byJewsh activists in the Soviet Union, accompanied by personal letters and appeals. It was smuggled out to the West and published by the American Jewish Conference on Soviet Jewry in 1972.
