Marty Drug

Biography

Marty Drug was a Jewish-owned pharmacy founded by Martin Weiss after he left Weiss Drug in the 1940s. The pharmacy was located at the corner of Adams and Colfax, two doors down from the Bluebird Theater. Like many early pharmacists, Martin (Marty) compounded his own drugs, using mortar and pestle to make salves and pills. Marty Drug had a friendly competition with another nearby Jewish-owned pharmacy, Eber Drugs. When either store ran out of supplies, the stores would often loan items to one another. The Mary Drug store closed in 1955.
