Abstract

Byron Akers, the owner of the Colorado Car Museum and the Ghost Town in Colorado Springs, reflects on his long time obsession with automobiles. Akers was born in Denver and moved to Colorado Springs and reflects on the introduction of the car. Recalls the transition from horse and buggy carriages to automobiles, the first automobile trip up Pikes Peak, and the cars he owns, including the steamer Locomobile.

Abstract

Albuquerque, New Mexico. A young man about to be executed by the soldiers of Pancho Villa is granted a last wish, to be executed while mounted on his pet horse. As the squad fires, the horse leaps over the wall and saves the young man, but soon after, the horse dies from three bullet wounds meant for its master. Probally a commerical recording. Quality: Good.

Carrie Herring describes her experiences in Iowa and owning a grocery store before moving to Denver in the late 1920s. Herring reflects on her time working at Golden Eagle Dry Goods Company before attending a comptometer course and obtaining a job at Macklem Baking Company, working her way up to the board. Herring discusses the impact of World War II on businesses and her experience at Altrusa Club, a women's service club formed during World War I.

Cedric "Rick" Page, professor of geography and urban studies at the University of Colorado, reflects on his research on the development of Dearfield, Colorado. Dearfield is considered a "Black town" because of the migration of African Americans out of the south and into the West. Page discusses the history of black communities settling Colorado and their efforts to establish towns and agricultural communities in the early 1900s.
