Jewish Women's Resource Center (1984-2006) (Denver, Colo.)

 Organization

Biography

The Jewish Women's Resource Center officially became an organization in 1984 after meeting monthly to discuss wys to bring a broader community of Jewish women together to learn. They began meeting at the Denver Jewish Community Center as they had donated space. A few years later, they were able to become a 501c nonprofit organization. The JWRC started with lectures and classes taught by women in the community. They worked to present topics about the diversity of Judaism, celebrate together, and host events. In 1985, they held the first community-wide Passover Women's Seder in Denver. The Haggadah Committee put together the JWRC's first Women's Haggadah, and revised it every year after. In 1986, the JWRC added two major components to what they did: a group of women learning to chant Torah and Haftorah and creating a 3-day women's Shabbat Fall Retreat. Every fall, women went to JCC Ranch Camp to learn and explore topics around Jewish Womanhood. For their 10th anniversary in 1994, the JWRC began publishing the Kol Nashim (The Voice of Women) newsletter. In 2006, after 22 years, Jewish women's history had caught up and many opportunities became widely available for Jewish women to learn, express their spirituality, and connect.
