Biography

Miriam Rachofsky married Samuel Abraham Kobesky in Poland and they immigrated to Manchester, England around 1871 with children Rachel, Betsy, Mark, and David. Their sons Harris and Ben were born in Manchester and the last name was shortened to Kobey. Their daughter Rachel Kobey married Isaac Shwayder, who had also migrated to Manchester from Eastern Europe. The Kobey family immigrated to New Jersey in about 1881, where Dora and Isaac were born, and then moved to Denver, Colorado in 1888. Miriam Kobey was a highly respected midwife and Samuel Abraham was rabbi of Congregation Agrudas Achim, located near the Platte River. Harris Kobey married Leah Sheffel and they honeymooned in Aspen, Colorado in 1898. They settled in Aspen and Ben Kobey and his famiy also moved to Aspen. The Kobey brothers owned stores in Aspen, including the Kobey Shoe and Clothing Store. The seven children of Harris and Leah Kobey lived with they uncle, Ben Kobey, after Leah died and Harris Kobey left for the East Coast. Ben Kobey moved his family to Denver and opened another Kobey store. Harris and Leah Kobey's daughter Dorothy "Dokes" Kobey was born in Aspen in 1905 and attended the University of Denver. Dokes Kobey married Nathan Berry, who worked at her uncle Ben's store in Denver. Hannah Shwayder, Dokes Kobey's cousin, had married Nathan's older brother Harry Berry.

Abstract Dorothy "Dokes" Berry (nee Kobey) was born in Aspen, Colorado in 1905 to Harris and Leah Sheffel Kobey. During Berry's childhood Aspen's primary industry was mining and very few Jewish families lived in the town. Her father and his brothers were businessmen who owned and operated apparel stores in Aspen, including the Kobey Shoe and Clothing Company.
