Biography

Deborah Howard is an Associate Professor and Head of Painting Program at the University of Denver. She has been teaching at the University of Denver since 1987. She holds and BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in drawing and printmaking and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in painting and printmaking.

Designs behind wax surface look like wallpaper with a curtain across the top.

Encaustic painting on canvas in reds, oranges, golds, blues and purples surrounded by ash wood frame. Canvas has black and white image of Maurice Blik and a reverse transfer of the image adjacent. Image is a photocopy of Deborah Howard’s print, B398.01.00017. Wax makes surface 3-dimensional and has nails embedded in it. Tally marks carved into wax and images of the Star of David and a moth visible in the wax (artist uses moths to symbolize Jews in her work).

Abstract

Multi-piece artwork consisting of an encaustic painting on canvas, pair of shoes and wood shelf for shoes.

Shoes are greenish, brown snake print, peep toe and ankle straps with 3.5-inch heel; they date to circa 1949. Shoes belonged to the mother of one of Deborah Howard’s portrait subjects, Harry Lopas, and was also Deborah’s aunt. Label on shoe says “Joseph Salon Shoes.” Wood shelf for shoe display is a simple box of light wood. Shoes and box stored separately from painting.
