Biography

Motty Shames (September 5, 1921 - April 30, 2011) was a co-founder of Shames-Makovsky Realty Company in Denver. He was born in Denver to Jacob and Rose Shames, the seventh child in his family. He attended Cheltenham Elementary, Lake Junior High and West High School. He served in the US Army 1942-1945 and was stationed in North Africa, Italy, and southern France. After returning, he was a partner in the S&S Trading Company with his brothers Sam and Ray. In 1971 he started the Shames-Makovsky Realty Company with his nephew Evan Makovsky. Motty retired in 1987. He was active in the Jewish Orthodox community for his entire life. He was a member of the building committee of Zera Abraham during the 1950s, and active in the expansion of EDOS. The Shames family was devoutly Zionistic. Motty and his wife Marilyn encouraged their four children to make 'aliyah' and did so themselves in 1987. Motty passed away in Jerusalem at the age of 89, where he had lived for the last 24 years of his life. He was survived by his wife, children Jay, Judy, David, and Ari (all of which lived in Israel), 20 grand-children, 16 great-grandchildren, and sister Freida Makovsky Englard.
