Bloom, Ida Strait, 1894-1987
Biography
Ida Strait was born in New York City in 1894 after her parents emigrated from Poland to the United States. Ida Strait's parents were from Warsaw, Poland, and settled in Atwood, Colorado, before returning to Poland. After they encountered persecution they came back to the United States and settled in Denver, Colorado. Ida worked as a laundress in the Brown Palace Hotel. Ida Strait married Pizer Bloom in 1910 and by 1914, the couple had saved enough money to open a store 2800 Downing Street in Denver and sold coal and feed. Their son Sam was born in Denver in 1911 and helped his parents run the Downing's Coal and Hardware Store at 33rd and Downing streets. The store grew into a large appliance store.
