Biography

Sheldon Steinhauser was born in the Bronx, New York City, on August 11, 1930. His accomplishments include service with the Anti-Defamation League, 1950-1985 (Mountain States Regional Director and serveral national positions in Denver, 1957-1985; Executive Director of the Allied Jewish Federation (now Jewish Colorado), 1985-1991; Associate Professor of Sociology at Metropolitan State University of Denver, 1969-2015, and served as the Director of Development for the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Anschutz Medical Campus. Stanley Steinhauser has consulted in the fields of human rights, higher education, age diversity and community well being. In 1977, as a founding member of the Colorado Committee of Concern for Soviet Jewry, he and his wife Jan traveled to the Soviet Union, met with Soviet Jews refused emigration, and eventually aided in securing the freedom of a woman and two children from Moscow.

The Union of Councils for Soviet Jews created massive lists of Refuseniks and political prisoners in the Soviet Union (Prisoners of Conscience)." The Union and set up action committees in cities across the U.S. and began the "Adopt a Prisoner" program.

Abstract Soviet Jews who wanted to emigrate from the Soviet Union were known as "Refuseniks." American Jewish students formed the Struggle for Soviet Jewry (SSSJ) in 1964 and the American Jewish Committee on Soviet Jewry (AJCSI) was also organized that year. Rabbi Samuel Adelman, rabbi of the BMH synagogue, spoke at Temple Emanuel and urged the liberal congregation to help Soviet Jews. Rabbi Raymond Zwerin, Sheldon Steinhauser, and Lillian Hoffman formed what became the Colorado Committee of Concern...
