Biography

Leopold Mayer was born in Alsace-Lorraine and immigrated to New York when he was 11 years old. In 1859 at the beginning of the Colorado gold rush, he began a 70-day walk to Auraria, Colorado from Leavenworth, Kansas. He went into the general merchandise business and served on the “second” Denver City Council. In 1880, the Mayer family went to Saguache, Colorado, where he became a banker and rancher. He served as a state representative while in Saguache and moved back to Denver in 1893 and died at the age of 88 in 1926.
