Biography

Charles Chatfield was born in Middlefield, Geauga County, Ohio, October 3, 1840. After making a trip to Pike's Peak, in 1859, he settled near Fort Scott, Kansas, and served six months in the Border War. Beginning in 1861, he served in Company D of the Seventeenth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and later the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division of the Reserve Army under Major General G. Granger during the Civil War. Killed Jun 27, 1864 (age 23), in the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain (near Marietta), Cobb Co., Georgia; buried at Marietta National Cemetery.
