Biography

Henry Lowenstein was born Ernst Heinrich Loewenstein on July 4, 1925 in Berlin, Germany to Dr. Max Moses Loewenstein and Marie [Maria] Lilli Margarete Batge Loewenstein. Henry Lowenstein died in Denver, Colorado on October 7, 2014. In 1939, an English family agreed to sponsor Henry and he was sent out of Berlin on the Kindertransport. His family remained in Germany until 1946, when the emigrated to the United States. In 1947, Henry was finally able to join his family in the United States after emigrating from England.

Framed gouache watercolor painting, with pencil sketch visible underneath paint, of a scene with three arches with twisted Corinthian columns; ionic columns line the sides. The center arch is coffered. Arches and columns are painted yellow. Lower right-hand corner signed "Lowenstein." Sticker on the back of frame says "Panel 3." It is presumed to be a set design.

Framed gouache watercolor painting, with pencil sketch visible underneath paint, of five scenes from "Hadrian VII." All five have a solid black backdrop with minimal set furnishings. Scenes include a room, altar, man knelling before a cardinal, throne with banner, candlesticks and railings and the same candlesticks and railings without the banner and throne chair. Sticker on the back of frame says "Panel 5." Also included is a mounted photograph from a production.

Framed gouache watercolor painting, with pencil sketch visible underneath paint, of two scenes with the top titled "Incomplete Education" and the bottom "The Meeting." The top image is of a lavish interior with a large window, ornate gold wall carvings, green upholstered furniture and one small side table. The bottom image is an office with a large desk, fireplace with candelabras and pictures hanging from a picture rail. "Lowenstein '64" is signed in the bottom right-hand corner.

Scope and Contents

Rocky Mountain PBS presented "The Life and Artwork of Maria Lowenstein" on the television show Arts District. The segment also included set designs of Henry Lowenstein. There was also an exhibit at Niza Knoll Gallery and another exhibit at the University of Denver. The folder contains correspondence and a biographical sketch. There is also a DVD of the Arts District program segment.

Framed gouache watercolor painting of set with blueish/white Doric columns and heavy red curtains with gold fringe and tassels. On stage left stands a line of Nazi soldiers against a black background while the Von Trapp family stands slightly right of center stage poised to sing. Scene is when the family is performing "Edelweiss" in concert near the end of the play. Framed set panel for "Sound of Music," which was performed at Cheesman Park. Sticker on the reverse side says "Panel 1."
