Biography
Marie [Maria] Lilli Margarete Bätge, b. Tallinn, m. Herr Steinberg, had one daughter, Karin M. Steinberg; then m. Dr. Max Israel Löwenstein (later Max Israel Loewenstein) in 1925; their son Ernst Heinrich Löwenstein (later Henry Lowenstein) b. July 4, 1925 was sent from Berlin to to England on the Kindertransport in 1939; the rest of the family emigrated to the United States in 1946, where they were joined by their son in 1947. __ __ __Her birth and baptismal certificate : B333.02.0001.0002.00007 (Marie Lilli Margarete Bätge, b. Berliner Gaswerke, Berlin Gasworks, bill addressed to Dr. Max Loewenstein. Marie Loewenstein used this receipt to prove residency in her apartment.

Receipt and bill from Berliner Kraft- und Licht (Bewag)-Aktiengesellschaft, Berlin Power and Light, Berlin, Germany used by Marie Loewenstein to prove residency in her apartment. Front cover is an advertisement for the company. On the back cover is a list of important information. Inside left of the bill is a receipt that has been filled out and is addressed to Dr. Max Loewenstein. Inside right side is a bill addressed to Dr. Max Loewenstein, it has not been filled out.
Certificate of Identity in Lieu of Passport, 1946 June 27
Clothing Ration Card, between 1940-1945
Clothing ration card issued to Marie Loewenstein. The front cover of the card is filled out by hand with Marie's name and address and stamped with the name and address of a shoemaker, "Clemens Polley, Bülowstraße 3." The inside of the card contains lists of articles of clothing and their value. The edges of the card were ration coupons and most are missing.
Correspondence, 1939-1984
Contains correspondence, envelopes, picture postcards and notes. Most of the correspondence is in German, but the picture postcards are in English and have photos, circa 1900, but cards were mailed in January-March of 1960 from Williamsport, Pennsylvania to Maria in Denver. There is no signature from the sender on the postcards. One letter in English written to the Lowenstein family in Berlin from a Rita (?) in Birmingham, England.

Discharge from Wittenauer Sanatorium, 1942 April 11
Letter that served as official discharge papers sent to Marie Loewenstein [Löwenstein in this document] for Dr. Max Loewenstein to leave Wittenauer Heilstätten, Wittenauer Sanatorium. Letter is on official Wittenauer Sanatorium stationary. Max was to be released on April 12, 1942.

"Gedichte von Georg Snlvefter Dierech" or "Poems by Georg Snlvefter Dierech", 1922, 1950
German poetry book with green fabric cover; heavily faded on the binding. Book is inscribed "For Katinka from Sylvester A.D. 1950 Westbrook, Conn." Presumably Maria Lowenstein acquired the book while she was living in the Northeast. She did have art shows in Connecticut.
