Marie [Maria] Lilli Margarete Bätge, b. Tallinn, m. Herr Steinberg, had one daughter, Karin M. Steinberg; then m. Dr. Max Israel Löwenstein (later Max Israel Loewenstein) in 1925; their son Ernst Heinrich Löwenstein (later Henry Lowenstein) b. July 4, 1925 was sent from Berlin to to England on the Kindertransport in 1939; the rest of the family emigrated to the United States in 1946, where they were joined by their son in 1947. __ __ __Her birth and baptismal certificate : B333.02.0001.0002.00007 (Marie Lilli Margarete Bätge, b. Ink wash painting titled "Despair" of a woman sitting on a short stool in front of a Fanklin stove with the door open and a pot on top. Sitting on the floor is an empty basket. Behind the woman is a window and a shelf with a candle and two canisters. Ink wash is done on an old roll of unused wallpaper as stated by the artist in a 1971 Rocky Mountain News Article. Scope and Contents Box contains one acrylic painting by Maria Lowenstein, done while she was living in Denver. Painting is of six figures, all with head coverings, grouped together. Three figures on the top appear female while the two figures on the lower left appear male. On the center right is a figure whose face is covered by their hands. Artist signature "Maria" in bottom left corner. The work is done is a cubist style using mostly shades of blue with some red and cream colored accents and black outlines....

Abstract

Two newspaper articles about Maria Lowenstein's one woman show in 1971 at the Gallery of the United Bank of Denver Lobby. The Rocky Mountain News article features a picture of Maria standing with one of her paintings and another image of a painting below. Articles both give very brief biographical infomation and mention her cureent work is all done in acrylic and focues on her recent travels. the articles are mounted on a piece of cardboard.

Oil painting on masonite board of a woman and child, possibly Madonna and Child. Woman with head scarf and long full robes sits on a wooden bench by an window holding a wrapped child in her arms. She looks down at the child's face with rays of light shinging through the window on the two; an indication it may be the Madonna and Child. Painting is done is an expressionist style using brown, blue, green and yellow tones.
