Marie [Maria] Lilli Margarete Bätge, b. Tallinn, m. Herr Steinberg, had one daughter, Karin M. Steinberg; then m. Dr. Max Israel Löwenstein (later Max Israel Loewenstein) in 1925; their son Ernst Heinrich Löwenstein (later Henry Lowenstein) b. July 4, 1925 was sent from Berlin to to England on the Kindertransport in 1939; the rest of the family emigrated to the United States in 1946, where they were joined by their son in 1947. __ __ __Her birth and baptismal certificate : B333.02.0001.0002.00007 (Marie Lilli Margarete Bätge, b. Scope and Contents

Miscellaneous photographs of the Lowenstein family members (both individual and group shots), including the family after they were reunited in Pennsylvania. A number of individual photos of Maria and a few photos unknown individuals also included. Three circa 1960s black and white negatives of small children, probably Maria's grandchildren.

Scope and Contents

Contains photographs and negatives of Maria Lowenstein's paintings and possibly paintings from Maria's art classes. Two photographs have children pictured by paintings- possibly Maria's grandsons. Originally titled "Art Classes and Painting Photographs" because it was in an envelope titled as such upon donation. However there are no classes in the pictures and the paintings all seem to be Maria's.

Statue at the Rosenstrasse Memorial in Berlin, Germany to honor Germans, mostly women, who protested the deportation of their Jewish spouses and children during the Rosenstrasse Protest. Marie Loewenstein and Karin Steinberg joined the thousands of Germans for six days, even facing S.S. machine guns. Max Loewenstein was among those saved from transportation to East European concentration camps.
