Marie [Maria] Lilli Margarete Bätge, b. Tallinn, m. Herr Steinberg, had one daughter, Karin M. Steinberg; then m. Dr. Max Israel Löwenstein (later Max Israel Loewenstein) in 1925; their son Ernst Heinrich Löwenstein (later Henry Lowenstein) b. July 4, 1925 was sent from Berlin to to England on the Kindertransport in 1939; the rest of the family emigrated to the United States in 1946, where they were joined by their son in 1947. __ __ __Her birth and baptismal certificate : B333.02.0001.0002.00007 (Marie Lilli Margarete Bätge, b. Scope and Contents

Contains photographs and negatives of Maria Lowenstein's paintings and possibly paintings from Maria's art classes. Two photographs have children pictured by paintings- possibly Maria's grandsons. Originally titled "Art Classes and Painting Photographs" because it was in an envelope titled as such upon donation. However there are no classes in the pictures and the paintings all seem to be Maria's.

Rocky Mountain PBS presented "The Life and Artwork of Maria Lowenstein" on the television show Arts District. The segment also included set designs of Henry Lowenstein. There was also an exhibit at Niza Knoll Gallery and another exhibit at the University of Denver. The folder contains correspondence and a biographical sketch. There is also a DVD of the Arts District program segment.

One Winsor Spiral Sketchbook, size 5 x 8, filled with pencil sketches of buildings, landscapes and seascapes, one watercolor and a few ink drawings. Several of the sketches have locations in and around Quebec written on them. Sketch book is dated "Summer 1956" on front cover; "Maria Lowenstein" is also written on cover. Stamped "Plankenhorn Stationary Co. Williamsport 2, PA" with "20" written in top right corner of front cover; presumably it was priced at 20 cents.

Scope and Contents Box contains one acrylic painting by Maria Lowenstein, done while she was living in Denver. Painting is of buildings with a red three-story and a cream colored two-story building in the foreground with tops of buildings in the distance. Artist signature "Maria" in bottom left corner. The work is done is a cubist style using shades of blue, red and cream with black outlines. The paint is on a textured surface. Appears as though cheesecloth was stretched over surface before paint was applied....
