Typed on back: ''That championship season ended Monday for the University of Denver. It returned a 1973 second place hockey trophy on order of the National Collegiate Athletic Association as part of a two year suspension penalty imposed by the NCAA over a dispute concerning the eligibility of four DU hockey players from Canada. The suspension was lifted in May, the NCAA wrote it wanted the trophy back, and it was dispatched with farewell glances from (left to right) Hockey Coach Marshall Johnston, Athletic Director Ron Oyer and Acting Chancellor Allen Pfnister. Two of the hockey players involved in the dispute, Brad Carefoot and Ched Miller, played in the national championship tournament.''
