Abstract

Solomon Nunez Carvalho (1815-1897) was the photographer for John C. Fremont's famous expedition to Colorado from 1853-54. Carvalho was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and was living in Baltimore, Maryland, when Fremont asked him to be the world's first expedition photographer. His journals were published as Incidents of Travel and Adventure in the Far West with Col. Fremont's Fifth Expedition, and enjoyed numerous editions. Following the treacherous expedition, Carvalho moved to Los Angeles, before sailing back to the eastern United States via the Panama Isthmus.
