Biographical / Historical
Bio: Louiva Stapleton was born in Colbran, Colorado on October 28, 1913 to Fredrica Grace Bennett and Glenn Read Wilcox. At the age of five, Louiva's mother died leaving Louiva and her two sisters with her father and stepmother. Because they did not get along with their stepmother, Louiva and her sisters moved to Aspen on August 10, 1921 to live with her great aunt and uncle, Mary Ella Stallard and Edgar Stallard. Louiva spent most of her childhood in the Stallard house working around the house and on the ranch. Louiva attended Aspen High School where she graduated in 1932. After graduating from highschool, Louiva took a job working at a bed and breakfast. She married William Stapleton on September 14, 1933 and moved into a house on 533 West Francis. Louiva and her husband had four children. The family enjoyed going on picnics, fishing, and hunting together on their free time. In the early 1950's, Louiva took a maid job at the Hotel Jerome. She also worked at the Thrift Shop and volunteered at the hospital and the Aspen Historical Society. Louiva's husband died in 1987 and as a widow, Louiva spent a lot of time with her children and grandchildren who, with the exception of one, all lived in Aspen. Louiva died on March 15, 2000 in Aspen, CO.
