Oral history interview with Dr. Clifton "C.L." Harkins, Nov. 16, 1974., 1974 November 16, 2005 May 17

Bury interviews long time educator C.L. Harkins, former Superintendent for the Arizona State Board of Education. Harkins first describes his experience with his own elementary and high school schooling in Hewitt, Texas, where he attended a one-room school from which he graduated in 1925. He then recounts his attempts to find and finish his college degree in engineering. After numerous courses at East Texas State, South Texas State Teachers' College, and University of California at Fullerton, he then finished his teaching degree at University of Texas, Austin. He shares the reasons for his arrival in Flagstaff and his early teaching experience at McNary, and gives a detailed account of the political, administrative, and legal (and curriculum) aspects of his work with local, state, county and national Departments of Education (as well as the Arizona Education Association and the Arizona School Board Association), working with such individuals as Herman Hendrix, Willis Easley, John Russell, C. Louise Barringer, J. Morris Richards, Bill Harliss, Ned Hill, L.D. Clemenson, "Skipper" Dick and Barry Goldwater.
