Abstract
Mr. Schmitz was born in Flagstaff, AZ on September 17, 1914. He recounts his experiences working on the Grand Canyon Railroad, and discusses loading and herding sheep, operating steam engines, snowstorms and changing train engines. He eventually went to work for Amtrak. Other topics discussed include: train accidents; the advantages of diesels and automation; working out of Grand Canyon; the meanings of engine numbers; the classes of engines; and various personal rememberances.
