Abstract

Mr. Matson was born in 1924, and was a long term railroad man. He was born and raised in the lumber camps of the Saginaw Company. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in and around Williams and Flagstaff, Arizona, doing various jobs at stations, including selling tickets and routing trains to the Grand Canyon. He was working during the high point of the railroad, especially to witness the trunk line to the Grand Canyon and its demise. Other topics discussed include: the Apex logging camp; living conditions and schools; accidents in logging camps; the discontinuation of the passenger train to the Grand Canyon from Williams due to buses; train derailments; diesel engines replacing steam engines; cattle shipping; uranium ore out of the Grand Canyon; and the end of freight trains to the Grand Canyon.
