Oral History Interview with Hawkinson, Marguerite, 2001, 2006 September 18
Abstract
Wife of Carl Hawkinson-Red and White Store -- Bought store in 1933. -- Collected money for water bill, telephone bill -- Packages wrapped to send to service people. Would call the store when there was fire, and we let others know where the fire was. Driving tests given at the store by Carl. In 1937 the Library was moved from the elementary school to a corner of their store. Park was used for holidays -- Rodeos on 73rd Ave. Hawkinson, Carl and Marguerite immediately became involved in their town In 1935 Carl was recruited to help organize the Volunteer Fire Department Marguerite was a room mother and involved in Girl Scouts and Jobs Daughters Bethel No. 18 After Carl died in 1959 Marguerite went back to teaching at Fairview Elementary School until she retired in 1971 Marguerite became involved with Boy Scouts because of her two grandsons Marguerite was a member of the Friends of the Library, Westminster Retired Teachers Assn and Westminster Historical Society Carl died on March 29, 1959 Marguerite died at the age of 97 on March 3, 2003 Marguerite's saying "Good, Better, Best, never let it rest, until your good is better, and your better is best."
