John Williams: The Future of the Novel (Reel 1 / Side 1), 1966
Abstract
This reel contains Dr. John Williams, professor of English at the University of Denver, and author of Butcher's Crossing and Stoner, lecturing as part of the University Lectureship for the 1965/66 academic year. The title of his lecture is, "The Future of the Novel." The audio begins with an introduction by Clinton Kelly followed by Dean Lindel introducing Dr. Williams. Williams begins by defining the novel as a relatively modern literary form. He then proceeds to define the novel as compared to poetry and then continues on a general discussion of the novel. Examples and discussions of several major novels take place throughout the lecture. Williams concludes by addressing current criticism of the novel.

The University Lectureship was proposed to the University Senate in 1953 and approved by the Board of Trustees in 1954. Appointees are nominated by the factulty to the University Senate. Subsequent appointment is made by the Board of Trustees through the Chancellor.
