Abstract

Photograph of students attending a Wigman class. Charlotte is seated in front, second from left. Inventory description provided: "My mother sent me to Desden, Germany to leard modern dance from Mary Wigman. It was a pretty amazing experience for a 17-year old from Oklahoma. My family said I could stay longer than the summer if I wanted- in those days people didn't dash across the ocean, and I was going at great sacrific to my parents. But then I found that in order to graduate, dancers had to show their works to government officials who feared there might be propaganda in the dances. Well, I didn't like that much so I left. I'm not sorry; for one thing, a friend had difficulty getting out later."
