Biographical / Historical
Mary Elizabeth Lenahan founded Dance Express, an inclusive dance company, in Ft. Collins in 1989. In watching her sister’s love of dance, joy of movement, and sense of rhythm, she recognized the capabilities of persons with Down syndrome and wanted to create artistic opportunities for dancers of differing abilities. Dance Express presents annual dance and dance theatre productions, teaches adaptive modern dance workshops, and makes guest appearances regionally. Through their workshop program, the company has served more than 4,000 students and adults with and without disabilities. The company’s community outreach models success and access to the arts for persons with differing abilities and disabilities, such as Down syndrome, autism, or developmental delay.
