This series contains the Chancellor's records of Frederick Maurice Hunter (1879-1964). Hunter was the 5th Chancellor of the University of Denver, from July 1928 until September 1935.

Biographical / Historical
Hunter was born on March 24, 1879 in Savannah, Missouri. He attended the University of Nebraska, earning an A.B. in 1905. He earned his A.M. from Columbia University in 1919 and his Ed.D. from the University of California in 1920. In addition to serving as the president of the National Education Association from 1920 to 1921 he also held positions as the Head of the College of Agriculture at the University of Nebraska from1911 to 1912, superintendent of public schools in Lincoln, Nebraska from 1912 to 1917 and superintendent of public schools in Oakland, California from 1917 to 1928.
Despite becoming Chancellor during the Great Depression, Hunter oversaw major developments on DU's campus. One major development in the physical landscape of the university was the construction of the Mary Reed Library building in 1932. Hunter also added new academic programs and degrees, including the Graduate School of Social Work, a Masters degree in librarianship, a fine arts program, and a music department. The graduate school at the University of Denver also began accepting its first doctoral candidates during Hunter's tenure. He also oversaw the transition from the semester to the quarter system. Hunter resigned in 1935 when he became the chancellor of the Oregon State System of Higher Education. He died in Oregon in 1964 at the age of 85.
