Abstract

This file contains programs and newspaper clippings from the CCOHA sponsored event, The Yellow Rose Ball. Event took place at the Teller House in Central City and was to honor the Flower Girls from various CCOH festival seasons. Bcka of program reads,' the yellow Rose ball is probably the oldest rtadtion of Central City, It is surprising to many visitiors that such beautiful rose could prosper high in the Rockies. These same roses are also found in the hills of Cornwall on the west coast of great Britian and in the mountains of vermont and New hampshire. The Yelllow Roses we see in central City came in 1866 from both these sources. After the Colorado mountains were opened up and the Gold rush was well on it's way, it soon became apparents that it was necessary to supplement the miers from the East with experiences miners from the hills in and around Cornwall. Their wives brought with them cuttings from the Yellow Roses. In ships crossing the atlantic and on the long journey across the continent the Yello Roses were nutured and tended wih meticulous care and love. Many times drinking water wa srationed to keep the cuttings alive. When they arrives in Central City, they were immediately planted in the rockey soil with which they were familiar. By late summer it was apparents to all the Yellow Rose would survive in the Rocky Mountains. The Cornishman attached great significance to this fact and felt it was a sign that the two were in Colorado to stay and stay they did. To celebrate, a dance was subscribed to by the miners and mine owners of Black Hawk, Nevadaville and Cenrta City. This was the first 'ball' in honor of the Yellow Rose of Central City. now almost one hundred years later we have another Yellow Rose Ball. This, too, is a symbol to the future of Colorado - born in the mining camps of the Rockies, now one of the Cultural Centers of the World.'
