Abstract

This box contains correspodence and memos (organized alphabetically) from various entities within and outside DU to the Board of Trustees and sometimes specifically the Treasurer from 1897-1984. There is a large amount of correspondence from the dates 1897-1910 written by and to Joseph C. Shattack, who was on the Board of Trustees from 1890-1916 and served as Secretary for some of 1890s. Much of the other correspondence is organized alphebetically by the last name of the author of the letters/memos. Frequent names seen in the early correspondence include H. L. Beardsley, Henry A. Buchtdel (former Governor of Colorado and Chancellor of DU from December 1899-September 1920), R. H. Beggs, W. J. Fine, and more. Lastly, this box contains Treasurer's memos from 1947-1948 and correspondence to and from Timothy L. Johnson (Vice Chancellor of Business and Financial Affairs and Treasurer in the early 1980s) from 1982-1984.

Series 13 contains reports to the Board of Trustees. This includes reports from the treasurer/secretary, faculty, departments, and audit reports regarding various departments and associations.

Arrangement

This box and its contents were previously located in the U113 (DU Business and Financial Affairs Records Collection). However, as many of its contents are addressed to the Board of Trustees at large and to Trustees who filled officer roles such as Secretary and Treasurer, the box has been moved to this collection (U114).

The role of Treasurer at the University of Denver was originally created to be filled by a member of the Board of Trustees, since the 1948 updated bylaws of the Board of Trustees, this position no longer had to be filled by a Trustee, but was still occasionally. Since at least the 1980s, the position of Treasurer was often filled by the person who also served as the Vice Chancellor of Business and Financial Affairs (though this is not required). However, the Treasurer fills important duties that often require reporting to the Board of Trustees.
