Yehoash Biography, circa 1970
Abstract
Biographical information on Solomon Bloomgarden (Yehoash) who was born in 1872 near the Russian-German border. Yehoash was a famous Yiddish poet, writer, and translator. He emigrated to New York in 1890. In 1900, Yehoyesh contracted acute tuberculosis and spent the next seven years at the Jewish Consumptives' Relief Society. Yehoash and Dr. Spivak became close personal friends. He was married in 1903 and in 1908 he made a fund-raising trip across America for the JCRS. He and his wife and daughter returned to New York in 1909. He wrote poems and historical novels and was published in many Yiddish publications and co-wrote with Dr. Spivak a dictionary of Hebrew and Aramaic words in Yiddish in 1911. He wrote for the humor and satire journal “Kundes” beginning in 1902. From 1909 until his death in 1927 in New York, he translated the Bible and many other works into Yiddish.
