Biographical / Historical
Nathan Rapaport was born 24 Feb 1845 near Vitebsk (part of Belarus). He married Sarah Schlechter in 1872 and had 3 daughters (Rose, Bessie and Fannie) before emigrating to the United States. His Naturalization papers state that he arrived at the Port of New York 17 May, 1887 and made his way to Reading, PA. He had another daughter (Jeannie) and a son (Maurice, my grandfather) in the 1890s. He owned and operated a Drygoods store in the 7th street area of Reading.
Nathan was a very early member of the Shomrei Habrith Synagogue of Reading, PA and was a President. The photo in your JCRS records was likely taken when he held that position. About 1 month before he passed away in 1926, he came to New York City to see his new grandson, William Rapoport, my father, as recorded in my dad’s Baby Book. He was interred at the Shromei Habrith Cemetery in Reading along with his wife, several of his children and grandchildren.
