Biographical / Historical

King D. Shwayder was born to Jesse and Nellie Shwayder in 1910. From a young age he started working in the family manufacturing business, Shwayder Brothers Inc., in Denver, Colorado. He attended the University of Colorado and the University of Pennsylvania before returning to work in the family business. In 1961, King Shwayder became president of Shwayder Brothers, Inc., and in 1965 the company changed its name to Samsonite Corporation. King Shwayder served on the University of Denver (DU) Board of Trustees, and he spoke at the 1977 groundbreaking of DU's Shwayder Art Building, which was funded in large part by the Jessie and Nellie Shwayder, Inc., Foundation started by his parents.

The series contains University of Denver newspaper clippings describing the groundbreaking of the Shwayder Art Building, King Shwayder's and his family's involvement in the building's construction, and the Shwayder family's support of the university as a whole.
