Abstract

Milton Anfenger and two men are standing and are wearing suits and hats. They are at Manhattan Beach located near Sloan's Lake in Denver, Colorado. Manhattan Beach was the first amusement park built west of the Mississippi River. The amusement park opened June 27, 1881 and closed after a fire destroyed the Manhattan Beach Club in 1908. The park was then reopened in 1908 as Luna Park which closed in 1914. The photograph is on page 79 of Milton Anfenger's scrapbook. It is said that Congregation Emanuel in Denver, Colorado was founded at the bris or circumcision ceremony of Milton Anfenger, the eldest son of Louis and Louise Anfenger. Milton Anfenger became a successful attorney and leader in Denver. He was a president and lifetime board member of National Jewish Hospital and wrote a book about its early history. Anfenger was active in state politics and was elected to the Colorado state senate in 1904.
