Ivory Silk Underlay for Dress, circa 1890

 Item — Box: B148.0001
Identifier: B148.01.0001

Abstract

An ivory silk dress used as an underlay for the ivory and black dress. The dress is sleeveless with a V-cut neck and a fitted bodice. The bodice is off-white silk lined with a natural (not bleached or dyed) colored cotton. The skirt is a butter cream colored silk and lined in a light weight muslin. The skirt has two large eleven inch rows of rouching (pleats that are attached at both ends), which add fullness to an overdress. Additionally, there is one small ruffle at the bottom. The fitted bodice and skirt are from two different garments. The back is held together by nine hooks-and-eyes in the center back. Originally belonged to Frances Wisebart Jacobs.
