Abstract

A green velvet ''Opera'' coat with ivory silk lining. The back of the coat is cut fuller than the front and has a pleated lower edge. The coat has sailor style collar and tri-pleated lapels. There are seven matching velvet covered buttons on upper center of the sleeves (four on left and three on right). There are buttons covered in matching green velvet on the cuffs. The coat closes with a knotted strip of green velvet forming a loop that goes around a matching velvet covered button. A green velvet shaped flower with knotted strips of green velvet forming a floral center is next to the loop. Inside the coat is one pocket on the right side at waist level that is made from a rectangle of silk and is heavily pleated. Originally belonged to Frances Wisebart Jacobs.

From the Collection:

The collection consists of clothing that belonged to Frances Wisebart Jacobs and to a relative and contemporary of hers. Also included in the collection are articles and papers about Abraham and Frances Wisebart Jacobs as well as two framed photographs (1887) of Frances Jacobs. The clothing comprises a two-piece satin and lace dress (ca. 1885), a silk underlay (ca. 1890), an ivory and black cotton overlay (ca. 1909-1913), and a velvet jacket (ca. 1924).
