Oral History Interview with Mildred Sweet, 1981 July 16
Abstract
"Mildred (nee Lewin) Sweet discusses her parents’ early days in Colorado, first in Leadville, then Salida, and finally Denver. She describes the many ventures that her father was involved in while in Denver, for example, the liquor store business and his many ventures in the amusement park business in western Denver, including Lakeside Amusement Park. She relates memories of her childhood and growing up in the privileged lifestyle that her father created for his family. She recounts her experiences as the wife of a mining engineer and enjoying life in remote mining communities. Mildred (nee Lewin) Sweet (b. 1889) was born in Denver to Albert and Marie Lewin, emigrants from Germany in the late 1880s. Along with her eight siblings, she was raised in a privileged lifestyle with homes both in Denver and in Palmer Lake. In 1913, she married Arthur Zwetow, a mining engineer, and they later Americanized their name to Sweet. She spent a number of years living outside Denver in Mexico, Utah, Nevada and California, as her husband pursued his mining career. She returned to Denver around 1950 after he died."
