Abstract

A sturdy travelling trunk made from wood, covered with treated tan/green canvas and reinforced with wood, leather and metal bracings. Leather handles are on the right and left sides. It has one metal lock, two metal latches and two leather straps on the lower part of the trunk that are meant to buckle. The inside lid is lined with a rust-colored cloth-backed with paper, and the inside bottom is lined with the same treated canvas as the exterior. Louis Anfenger used this trunk when he and his family went to Europe in 1890 (see also Louis Anfenger's Diary detailing his trip). The lock box has engraved in a circle: ''Yale & Town, MFG Co, Stamford Conn USA''. There are two stickers on left side lower panel: one is oval shaped in red and tan (the only legible word is ''Paris'') and the other is a blue on white square stating: ''Union Transfer Co., Baggage checked at hotels and residences, quick service careful handling, 165 Stevenson St. Bet Palace Hotel & Third St. San Francisco CAL., Telephone Pri. Ex. 83''. There are six stickers on the right side. One sticker is an oval in red, tan and black that is sideways and states: ''Coln am Rhein; Hotel du Nord, vormals J. Friedrich, einziges Hotel I. Ranges am Central-Banhof''. Below that sticker is a red and tan rectangular sticker placed upside-down (the only legible word is ''Bruxelles''). The last four stickers are all black on tan and state: ''639 Paris, Paris vis Quevy.'' Below the group of stickers is hand-lettered in black ink in capital letters: ''ANFENGER, DENVER''.
