Abstract

Professor Howe's diary for 1901 recounts his brief weather and astronomical observations, administrative and teaching activities at the University of Denver, entertainment of visitors to the Chamberlin Observatory, participation in events in University Park and elsewhere in Denver, as well as his family and religious life. Special mention is made of: reports filtering in about the ''Great Fireball of December 7, 1900,'' but with no definitive location determined; news on January 22 of his election as president of the Colorado Academy of Science; his sons Julian and Warren being among the victims of a February outbreak of scarlet fever at the University Park School, which was closed for a week by order of the Health Officer; in March, two grass fires that occurred near the Howes' home; formation of the University Park Golf Club, with lessons offered beginning on March 21; in mid May, Dean Howe's 3-year term as member of the University Park School Board expired, and he was succeded by Professor James E. Le Rossignol; the University's first Summer School opened classes on June 13; the American Association for the Advancement of Science held its convention in Denver beginning August 26, with the Dean and his students presenting papers, and the Howes hosting visitors; on September 7 news of President William McKinley's assassination arrived, and on September 19 a memorial parade was held in downtown Denver; and even though the University continued in financial crisis, on November 23 Howe signed a contract to enlarge the back porch of their home to accommodate a refrigerator.
