Abstract

Frances Hayes of 3343 E. Colorado Avenue (and formerly of 2181 S. Clayton Street), Denver, Colorado shares her memories about the University Park area of Denver including attending church services at Old Main, now University Hall, on the University of Denver campus before the United Park Methodist Church was built. She notes that Sunday school classes were held both at the Iliff School of Theology and in Old Main at this time. Hayes also talks about her summer wedding ceremony in Wasser Chapel in the University Park United Methodist Church, the influence that the University of Denver had on the neighborhood, and the retail stores that were located in the area, including pharmacies and grocery stores.

The series consists of 50 oral histories collected by Barry Matchett during 1986. The interviewees were all persons who lived in the University Park neighborhood, and concerned their memories of growing up and living in the neighborhood over a number of years.

Title supplied by cataloger. ||Interview conducted at 2474 S. Jackson Street, Denver, Colorado on April 25, 1986. ||Participants: Nancy Dorn ; Frances Hayes. ||Frances E. Hayes (1909-2005) was born in Denver, Colorado and lived in the University Park area. Hayes attended the University Park Elementary School, Byers Junior High School, and South High School. She received her B.A. from the University of Denver (DU) in 1932, and worked in various offices at the university, including the Admissions, Alumni and Registrar's offices. Hayes retired from DU in 1974.
