Abstract

President John F. Kennedy speaks on the steps of the Rose Garden at the White House after presenting United States Air Force General (Retired) Emmett (Rosie) O'Donnell, Jr. with the Defense Distinguished Service Medal. General O'Donnell, on the President's left, received the award for his exceptional service in the Pacific during World War II. A color guard representing the different branches of the Armed Forces hold flags. Members of Congress and an official from the United States Air Force also attended the ceremony. Eugene M. Zuckert, Secretary of the Air Force, stands on Kennedy's right. In the second row, left to right are General Curtis E. LeMay, Air Force Chief of Staff, Senator Daniel K. Inouye (D-Hawaii), and Senator Kenneth B. Keating (R-N.Y.). In the third row, left to right are an unidentified Air Force official, Senator Barry M. Goldwater (R-Ariz.), Senator Peter H. Dominick (R-Colo.), Senator W. Stuart Symington (D-Mo.), and Senator Clair Engle (D-Calif.)
