Report from Washington. Do nothing Congress, 1963 August 7
Abstract
Senator Peter H. Dominick (R-Colo.) delivers his weekly radio address, Report from Washington, on August 7, 1963. Sen. Dominick compares the accomplishments of the 80th Congress, described by President Harry S. Truman as the do nothing Congress, to the current Congress. He finds that the first session of the 88th Congress has passed fewer bills, many of which simply extended existing laws dealing with the draft, corporate and excise taxes, and the national debt ceiling. He attributes the slow legislative process to a lack of enthusiasm for administration programs such as mass transit and Medicare as well as controversy over the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty and legislation dealing with civil rights and taxes.
