Newspaper clipping pasted to the back of the photograph: "The University Park Campus of the University of Denver in 1893. Mountains can be seen in background at far left is the Iliff School of Theology, faced by University Hall. Next are the observatory, faculty homes and other early-day residences. Denver was a frontier community of fewer than 3,000 inhabitants when it was announced in the fall of 1862 that plans were afoot for "A Seminary for Denver" under the guidance of the 'solid men of denver.' In fact, when then new institution was incorporated on March 5, 1864, most of the residents were more concerned with Indian raids, crop failures, the scarcity of surface gold and the temperamental ragings of floodprone Cherry Creek than they were with the pursuit of higher education in Denver. It was in this setting that the University of Denver was founded 100 years ago as the Colorado Seminary. The institution didn't take on its present."
