Biographical / Historical
In 1948, the office was called DU Security Services, and was headed by Wayne Littrell (see also M463), who had been the Director of Veteran Housing. Two retired Denver police officers were hired to deal with safety and security concerns. The office also oversaw the mail room, phone services, emergency health services, and Sunday services, in addition to the more traditional legal concerns. The name was updated to the Department of Campus Safety in the late 1970s.
The Department of Campus Safety is staffed 24 hours a day year-round by trained professionals employed to serve the University community.
DU Campus Safety logs over 62,000 computer aided dispatch events (approximately 170 per day) and over 13,000 calls for service. Additionally, approximately 1,000 reports are written annually by Campus Safety Officers.
