Biographical / Historical

The University of Denver has operated with a career services office since July 1972. The offices of Placement and Counseling were combined to create the Office of Career Services that year. Al C. Serafin was the first director until their death in 1976. By 1977, the office name changed to Career Planning and Placement Center. By 1978, the name changed again to Career, Counseling and Placement (CCP) Center. By 1982, the office was shortened to Couseling and Placement Center. By 1984, the Career and Placement Center was a division of the Counseling and Placement Centers office, but was moved out of this affiliation by 1990. In 1992, the Career and Placement Center (CPC) was shortened to Career Center. By 2014, the office name was changed to Career Services. By 2018, the office name was changed to Career@DU to represent a collection of career centers across campus. By 2021, the overseeing office name was changed to Career and Professional Development.

The current mission of Career and Professional Development office is to be "an active partner in building a community where people of all identities are included and welcomed. We equip students and alumni with career skills, knowledge, experience and connections that enable them to confidently pursue their current and future aspirations."
